PLA own up Manipur IGP's killing
Prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC had been imposed at Churachandpur district from where both the deceased hailed.

Imphal: The People's Liberation Army (PLA), the armed wing of the Revolutionary People's Front, on Sunday claimed responsibility for Saturday's ambush at Oinam, Bishenpur, in which the IGP (Intelligence) and a havildar were killed.

The 'communication and publicity' department of the outfit claimed responsibililty for the ambush though it did not specify reasons for the attack.

It was the first time in years that an attack was carried on state police personnel by militants.

Meanwhile, prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC had been imposed at Churachandpur district from where both the deceased hailed.

Some vehicles were damaged at Churachandpur by angry people and all public vehicles going to Churachandpur were cancelled on Sunday following the tense situation.

The bodies of the policemen would be taken to the home district on Sunday for the last rites.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, Rajya Sabha MP Rishang Keishing and Lok Sabha MP Mani Charanamei denounced the "dastardly" killing.

Manipur Governor S S Sidhu condemned the incident and called it a "cowardly, dastardly and inhuman act". A condolence meeting wasorganised at the CID Headquarters on Sunday, chaired by M Shantikumar Singh, SP/CID(CB).
