Manmohan Singh has led a lifestyle minus vices, is an ideal patient.

New Delhi: Doctors at AIIMS say that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is recuperating after cardiac surgery is making excellent progress.

Sources confirm that the doctors feel Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was making "rapid progress" after successful coronary bypass surgery and could be back at work well ahead of general elections expected before May.

On Tuesday, the Prime Minister was put on a regular diet, his personal physician KS Reddy said.

"The prime minister is doing well and has been put on a regular diet from Tuesday," Reddy told IANS.

According to Reddy, the room where the prime minister is recuperating after surgery is specially meant for him.

"It is an ICU cum VIP room. A decision of shifting the prime minister into another room may be taken by doctors Tuesday evening," Reddy said.

Manmohan Singh's wife and three daughters have been camping in the premier institution.

Manmohan Singh underwent a multiple bypass surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Saturday to remove five arterial blockages and is currently recuperating in an intensive care unit (ICU).

Singh had previously undergone bypass surgery in 1990 in Britain. He also underwent wrist surgery in 2006, a prostate gland surgery and a cataract removal procedure last year, officials said.

Recovering from the current surgery, the PM stayed up all morning on Tuesday watching the Republic Day parade on television. He had been allowed by the doctors to speak for some time to his family since Sunday.

He was put on semi-solid diet since Tuesday, a milestone doctors are happy about ever since his successful by-pass heart surgery on Saturday.

Doctors also said that several of his invasive monitoring lines had been taken off. He is undergoing physiotherapy to help him in his movement.

The doctors attending on the Prime Minister say that he is stable, comfortable and is making rapid progress," the government said in a statement. Singh will be in hospital for at least a week and may be able to return to work in a month, doctors involved in his operation have said.

Leaders across the world including US President Barack Obama have sent their wishes for a speedy recovery to Manmohan Singh. On Saturday, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani sent bouquets of flowers to the Prime Minister. India's relations with Pakistan have been tense since the November Mumbai attacks.
