PM recalls rural childhood | Aims for the moon
PM would like basic development to reach rural India quickly.

New Delhi Prime Minister Manmohan Singh got nostalgic and inspirational on the Independence Day celebrations.

Speaking from the ramparts of the Red Fort on Friday, in the national capital, he recalled his childhood days when he studied at night in the dim light of a kerosene lamp.

The PM lamented on Friday that many in the country 'still live that life' -- without roads, electricity and drinking water.

"I spent the first 10 years of my life in a village that had no electricity, no drinking water supply, no doctor, no roads and no phones. I had to walk many miles to a school," he said from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the country's 61st Independence Day.

"I had to study at night in the dim light of a kerosene lamp. After independence there has been considerable development in rural areas, yet many of our citizens still live a life that I lived in my childhood," he said.

The Indian government has rural development intensive programmes like the 'Bharat Nirma programme', a four year business plan for rural infrastructure.

The Bharat Nirman programme plans to provide electricity to 1,25,000 villages, provide 60 lakh houses at the rate of 15 lakh houses each year, for the homeless and many other initiatives.
