VELLORE: The heavy downpour which started on Monday night and lasted almost till Tuesday morning, affected traffic on several arterial roads in the district. In many places trees were uprooted trees owing to strong winds and rocks rolled down towards the houses located on foot hill in some areas in the district. However, there were no reports of loss of life or damage to property from any part.The sweltering heat during the day and rains at night for the past few days have slowed down traffic movement in the district .On Monday, it started as a drizzle at 9 pm intensified and poured heavily till Tuesday morning. Water logging was reported from many pockets.At Salavanpet in Vellore, a huge rock from the Senganatham hill rolled and hit the house of one Selvaraj. However, the inmates escaped unhurt. Officials from the Revenue department visited the spot and assessed the situation. Other parts of the district, Gudiyatham, Sholinghur and Ponnai also experienced heavy rains during the same period. Trees fell at many places on Arakkonam-Kancheepuram road near Sernthamangalam bringing the traffic to a standstill on Tuesday.Ponnai recorded the highest rainfall of 76.6 mm followed by Vellore city - 73.6 mm, Sholinghur 66.7 mm, Gudiyatham - 66.2 mm, Walajah - 64 mm, Katpadi - 52.5 mm, Ambur - 46.8 mm, Alangayam - 46.6 mm, Arcot - 30.2 mm, Vaniyambadi - 27 mm, Melalathur - 8 mm and Tirupattur - 5.2 mm.
