VIJAYAWADA: Power generation was affected at Narla Tata Rao Thermal Power Station (NTTPS) on Sunday as the VI unit developed a technical snag. At present, only five units are generating power at the thermal station as the V unit is undergoing overhaul. Consequently, the power generation in the thermal plant came down. Thermal station chief engineer G Kishore Babu said there was no coal shortage for the plant as they are getting coal from Talcher. It is also receiving coal supplies from Chennai port. On Sunday, it got 11 rakes of coal and of them five were from Talcher.
To overcome the shortage of coal due to Sakalajanula Samme by miners of the Singareni Collieries Company Limited, the NTTPS authorities are also importing coal from other countries. The thermal station needs 22,000 tonnes of coal a day. It gets coal supplies in six rakes daily for all the NTTPS units. The power station used used to get 5 to 6 rakes of coal a day from Manuguru. The supply of Singareni coal from Manuguru has been suspended for the past 10 days due to Sakalajanula Samme. Coal from Talcher which is 950 km away from Vijayawada, is being transported up to Kakinada through the sea route and from there by road. As a result, the thermal station has been forced to bear additional expenditure after the launch of Sakalajanula Samme.
