In a bid to conserve energy, the power utilities are contemplating fixing prepaid metres, in phases, in government offices. They have set a target to reduce power wastage in the government offices by at least ten percent. For this, they will make energy audit compulsory in the offices.
According to the sources, the power officials hope that these measures would help reduce wastage. The state government is also planning to entrust the district collectors with responsibilities to reduce power wastage.
They are likely to rank the districts on the basis of the effectiveness in the implementation of power conservation measures. The collectors were directed to conduct regular meetings with power officials on power conservation and submit monthly reports to the state government.
In a recent meeting, chief secretary Minnie Mathew directed power utility officials to submit a detailed action plan to achieve the estimated energy savings of 10,000 million units (MU) to 15,000 MU per year.
She has already issued a circular to all the employees of the Secretariat to conserve energy by switching off lights and fans when not needed.
Also, it was decided not to use air-conditioners for the following six months to set an example of conserving energy to other government offices in the state.
Matthew further directed the officials to work out the modalities on giving cash awards to the ‘best conservers’ to encourage energy saving.
Meanwhile, the government instructed Discoms to ensure uninterrupted power supply for 7 hours for protecting the standing crops during kharif season. Government was allocating `5,000 crore to power sector alone every year out of which `3,000 crore was allocated for free power supply to the farm sector.
