Preparing to continue as test driver: Karun

Abu Dhabi: Ace Indian driver Karun Chandhok said that such is the situation in the Formula One arena that he might have to continue as a test driver for any of the teams in the upcoming season.

"I am mentally preparing myself to continue as a test driver for another season. As of now, most of the teams have announced their list of drivers for the 2012 season. There are only two slots up for grabs - one with the Williams and other with the HRT (Hispania Racing Team).

"So situation is a bit difficult but I am ready to work hard," Chandhok, who is one of the premier faces of the upcoming i1 Supercar Series, told the mediapersons at the launch.

Asked about the economics and parameters that are taken into account when F1 teams zeroed in on their list of drivers, Chandhok said, "Now the F1 teams are also looking at drivers who can essentially bring them good sponsorship money. It's indeed a tough situation."

The Chennai lad said that he opted to participate in the i1 series in order to promote motorsport in India.

"It's a concept which is aimed at grabbing the attention of the new audience. As far as I am concerned, I am ready to lend my hand at anything that will help promote motorsport in India," Chandhok insisted.

"The timing of the race also suits my availability as it will be held in the winter after the conclusion of the F1 season. The F1 still remains my primary focus but there won't be any shortage of commitment in my participation in i1. This will certainly be a big boost for the upcoming Indian drivers," he added.

Asked about what his motivation level will be in i1 series, having competed in F1, Chandhok explained, "Even now when I go for a go-karting session with 15-16 years old around, I still find an urge to beat them. So when I would compete in i1 Super Series, my goal will be to give it my best shot."

Former Force India and current Ferrari driver Giancarlo Fisichella is of the opinion that with the likes of him, Vitantonio Liuzzi, Chandhok and Sakon Yamamoto vying for top honours, it will be a great opportunity for young Indian drivers.

"The Indian youngsters will be getting a lot of guidance from some of world's top drivers. That will certainly prove to be beneficial for them. Even four years back, India were nowhere in the picture as far as F1 was concerned, but things have changed since then.

"The Buddh International Circuit is one of the best in the world and India are on the right track," the Italian said.
