The QS World University Rankings 2019 has released on Wednesday the list of the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings. In the list, IIT Bombay has taken the crown of being India’s Top University of 2019. IIT Bombay has been globally ranked 162 and has moved up by 17 positions since last year when it made its debut in the Top 200 Club. The varsity has paved its way to India’s Numero Uno by gaining 40 positions in 2018 rankings, moving up from rank 219 to 179, and now stepping 17 positions up this year to rank 162.
The country’s #2 Top University rank is taken by IISc Bangalore with 170 global rank. IISc Bangalore has moved 20 points up since last year.
The prestigious IIT Delhi held its global rank 172 and ranked #3 Top University of India.
Rank 4,5,6 is followed by IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur and IIT Kharagpur in the Top 300 Club with global ranks 264, 283 and 295 respectively. While IIT Madras has maintained its global rank 264 since last year’s rankings, IIT Kanpur has moved up by 10 positions from 293 in 2018 to 283 in 2019 QS World Top University Rankings. IIT Kharagpur has entered the Top 300 club this year by moving 13 positions up from 308 in 2018 to 295 in 2019.
The only other IITs to make it to the QS World Top University Rankings 2019 are IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati with global ranks 381 and 472 respectively.
The global Higher Education analysts Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) releases World University Rankings every year and in its 15th edition this year, 6 of India’s Top 8 IITs/IISc have shown improvement in their global rank while 2 have shown stable performance.
The improvement in global ranks has been credited to Research Citations of these varsities. As per Ben Sowter, Research Director at Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), “Research produced by the faculty at the 19 (Indian) universities ranked in both the 2018 and 2019 rankings have yielded, cumulatively, 803,000 citations. This is 85,000 more than in 2018’s edition of the rankings, which is creditworthy. The rise is also responsible for India’s overall citations-per-faculty ratio rising from 46.90 in 2018 to 50.74 in 2019.”
“However, the problem for Indian institutions and faculty is that the global citations-per-faculty rate has risen by more, reflecting the increasingly-intense international research environment. In 2018, the overall citations-per-faculty average was 51.74; it’s now 60.03 per faculty member. India’s research is demonstrably improving — but more slowly than its international competitors,” added Sowter, giving a hint to India’s Top IITs/IISc to match pace with its global counterparts.
Amity University, Amrita University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Thapar Institute (Deemed to be University), Vellore Institute of Technology are the rookies that featured in QS World Top University Rankings 2019 in the 801-100 club except Jamia Millia Islamia that is placed in the 751-800 club.
To sum up, a total of 24 Indian Universities have been ranked in QS World Top University Rankings 2019 with 7 moving up the ladder, 9 holding their ground, 3 losing their rankings and 5 making their debut.
Talking about the Global Leaders of Higher Education, MIT maintained its dominance with Global Rank# 1 seventh year in a row, followed by Stanford University and Harvard University at number 2 and 3 respectively.
