THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State will soon have a Srinivasa Ramanujan Institute for Basic Sciences to promote research in basic sciences. This was announced by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, while inaugurating the state-wide celebrations of the National Mathematical Year.The mathematical year celebrations in the state is being organised by the  Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) and the Kerala School of Mathematics.While lauding the efforts of the Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) for the promotion of traditional knowledge and intellectual property rights, the Chief Minister said that Kerala had a rich mathematical heritage and that everything from computer to space science has a base in maths.The inaugural function was presided over by K Muraleedharan and Shashi Tharoor MP, was the chief guest. KSCSTE executive vice-president V N Rajasekharan Pillai, CUSAT Vice-Chancellor Ramachandran Thekkedath and Kerala School of Mathematics director M Manickam were some of the few who spoke at the function.The year-long activities will include maths quiz, elocution competition, Ramanujan Lecture series in Universities, seminars and workshops on mathematics teaching, maths expo and symposia. The activities will be co-ordinated by a task force representing these institutions through the Council and Kerala School of Mathematics. It will culminate on National Mathematical Day on December 22 when prizes for various competitions will be distributed.In this connection a malayalam translation of the book ‘The man who knew infinity by Robert Kanigel’ will also be carried out.
