Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar on Friday said he has directed the Department of Kannada and Culture to re-open a unit at the Kannada Sahitya Parishat which has been compiling Kannada dictionaries.
Speaking at a function organised by the department to felicitate Prof G Venkatasubbaiah, who is considered as the ‘Father of Kannada dictionary’, the CM said, “Our government is ready to give necessary financial assistance to that unit to carry on its activities.”
Lexicographer Prof G Venkatasubbaiah, had urged the government to revive the unit at the Parishat.
Describing Prof Venkatasubbaiah as ‘Nigantu Brahma’, Shettar said “Venkatasubbaiah is one of the most valuable assets of the state. His contribution to Kannada is immense. His principals are guidance to all of us.”
Thanking the CM for his commitment to the growth of Kannada language, Venkatasubbaiah said “It has been over 20 years since the dictionary unit has been closed. Today not even a single paper or document is available there. If the unit was functioning, about seven to eight dictionaries would have been brought out.”
Calling upon the Parishat to constitute a team of 10-15 language experts, he said “To link South Indian languages, bilingual and trilingual dictionaries have to be compiled.”
“GV is a bridge between the past and the present literary circle,” said literary critic L S Sheshagiri Rao.
Urban Development Minister S Suresh Kumar, Minister for Kannada and Culture Govind M Karjol and others were present.
