RG Kar Hospital Crime Scene Compromised? Kolkata Police Clarify After Row Over Viral Photo
The Kolkata Police rejected CBI claims and stated that the crime scene of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was "not compromised"

A picture of the crowded seminar room after the body of the 31-year-old doctor was recovered from Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital went viral on social media. Soon after the picture showing many individuals present inside the seminar hall grabbed attention on Friday, several questions were raised as to how so many people were allowed to enter the crime scene. Besides this, it was alleged that the crime scene was altered.

Earlier during a hearing in Supreme Court, CBI alleged that the evidence in the case had been hampered and the crime scene was altered.

Meanwhile, responding to the allegations levelled in reference to the viral picture, the Kolkata Police rejected the claims made by the central probe agency and asserted that the crime scene was “not compromised”. In fact, it was clarified that all individuals seen in the photograph were fully authorised to be there and have been identified.

“We are talking about the photo in question. The area is cordoned off. Behind the cordon is the body. I can tell you the names of all the people who are in the picture. They were all part of the investigation team. At no point in time could anybody enter this area who was not authorised. Nobody entered who was not associated with the investigation process,” Indira Mukherjee, DCP Central, Kolkata Police said during a press briefing.

Mukherjee explained the photograph saying, “We have a videographer from the detective department, Commissioner of Police, Additional CP-1, Lady Police and forensic officials here. All are known to us and identified.”

“There is also another picture and a new set of people. We have the witness doctor, FSL, fingerprint expert, the ACP of the detective department, the videographer, additional CP-1 and the forensic officials. This picture or the video is of the time when the inquest process was over,” she said describing the second image.

In addition to this, the police informed that no evidence was lost during the investigation. Mentioning the details, it has been claimed that the police first received the information regarding the incident at 10.10 am on August 9. At 10.12 am, the police personnel reached the spot from the outpost of the hospital. At 10:30 in the morning, a second cordon was created by the police.

The incident took place on August 9, when the semi-naked body of the trainee doctor, a second-year postgraduate student, was discovered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The gruesome crime sparked widespread protests across the country with protestors demanding justice for the victim and strict punishment for the culprits.

‘Crime Scene Was Destroyed’: BJP Alleges

Alleging that the crime scene was destroyed, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya shared an alleged video of August 9 and said that the scene was completely destroyed with so many doctors, policemen, hospital staff and outsiders in the Place of Occurrence.

Taking to X, he wrote, “Shocking footage from Seminar Room of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, soon after the lifeless body of the raped and murdered PGT lady doctor was found. The crime scene was completely destroyed with so many doctors, policemen, hospital staff and OUTSIDERS in the Place of Occurrence (PO).”

Raising several questions, Maliviya raised concerns over the intent of Mamata Banerjee government and its attempt to cover up the crime. “The out of line statements made by Commissioner of Kolkata Police add to the grisly crime,” he said.
