New Delhi: Dr A K Khare, the head of the Orthopaedics Department, Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, has been arrested after an intern alleged that the surgeon had tried to sodomise him.
An FIR was registered against Khare on Friday after the intern lodged a police complaint that Khare had taken him home, got him drunk and then tried to sodomise him.
On Friday angry students mobbed Khare and demanded that he be suspended from the hospital.
They also demanded an inquiry into the matter claiming that Khare had been sexually abusing interns for the past seven years but that this was the first time that an intern had had the courage to report the incident.
A case was registered against the doctor at the Chankyapuri Police Station following which Khare has been arrested.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Delhi, Anita Roy, said, "Khare took the student home and got him drunk. He then sodomised him. The student gave us a formal statement and we have arrested the doctor."
On Friday students gheraoed the Medical Superintendent of RML, Dr N K Chaturvedi and demanded immediate action against Khare.
Following violent protests, the administration held a long meeting and suspended Khare.
Dr. NK Chaturvedi said, "The complaint was forwarded to the concerned authorities who have suspended Khare."
The matter is also going to be taken up by the Health Ministry.
