Sanjay Dutt to stay out of jail for another month
Special Mumbai court failed to serve copy of judgement to Dutt on Thursday.

Mumbai: Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt, sentenced to six years for keeping illegal arms linked to India's worst bombings, will remain out of jail on a legal technicality for at least another month, his lawyer said on Wednesday.

The macho actor began serving his sentence on July 31 — for getting guns from gangsters linked with the 1993 Mumbai bombings that killed 257 people — but walked out on bail about three weeks later.

He appealed against his sentence in the Supreme Court and was allowed bail until he was served a copy of the judgement by the special Mumbai court which sentenced him.

His lawyers contended that they could not argue his case in the absence of a copy of the judgement, which was originally to be served on Thursday.

"We don't expect the judgement copy to be served until end-October," Dutt's lawyer Karan Singh says. "So he will be out until then at least."

An official at the special court said the first of the judgement copies could come around Oct. 15. Dutt was among the last to be sentenced. Once he is served the judgement, Dutt is expected to be sent back to a jail in Pune.

Dutt was among 100 people found guilty by the court which sentenced 12 of them to death and 20 to life in prison while handing varied jail terms and fines to the rest.
