Amendment will ensure that women attempting Sati are treated as victims; blame will be put on community.
New Delhi: The Government plans to treat women attempting Sati as victims, not offenders, and hold the entire community of a place guilty for the crime.
Amendments in the Commission of Sati (Prevention) Act, 1987, would treat a woman attempting Sati as person forced to commit suicide, Minister of State for Woman and Child Development Renuka Chowdhury told the Lok Sabha in a written reply on Tuesday.
Panchayat officials will be held responsible for implementing the Act and increasing the punishment for offences.
There is also a proposal to impose collective fines on communities. In its present form, attempt to commit Sati is punishable with imprisonment up to one year and a fine.
