CHENNAI: GVK Emergency Management and Research Institute, on Monday, celebrated ‘EMT Day’ on their office premises to acknowledge the life saving services of emergency medical technicians (EMTs). EMTs are trained to provide life support care. Emergency cases are assigned to any EMT by an emergency response officer or dispatch officer. Pre-arrival communication and instructions, on-scene care, en-route care, seeking and adherence to on-line medical direction (in critical cases) and patient hand over are a few of the key functions of an EMT. Emergency medical technicians generally transport cases to nearest hospital. They record and maintain PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) and other such documents in the ambulance. They are also responsible for the upkeep of medical equipment in the ambulance. In addition, EMTs also have play a role to spread awareness of GVK EMRI and strengthen its relations with local hospitals. Assessment and management of the patient, basic life support and ERC physician advice are crucial aspects of patient care practices rendered by them. Also, they are expected to maintain highest ethical standard and integrity in service provision.EMT education has been a major concern for the organisation. Since last year, GVK EMRI has been making sincere attempts to enhance the performance of EMTs. One such example is the development of pre-hospital emergency care protocols in the year 2011-12 with the support of Stanford School of Medicine, USA. On EMT day, GVK EMRI took the opportunity to thank emergency medical technicians for their services to patients. Dr C Vamsadhara, Director of Medical Education, presided over the function and distributed mementoes and certificates to deserving emergency medical technicians. BN Sridhar, Chief Operating Officer and other officials were present on the occasion.
