Bodies found in decomposed state after neighbours complained of foul smell

The city police on Friday recovered the partially decomposed bodies of a sexagenarian woman and her two daughters, both unmarried, from their residence in Kodungaiyur after residents complained about a foul smell emanating from the house.

Police said Vasantha (65), a resident of MGR Nagar 10th Cross Street, Kodungaiyur, was separated from her husband Rajan over two decades ago. She was living with her daughters – Geetha (42), a singer in a wedding band, and Gajalakshmi (35), an employee in a printing press — who were also found dead along with her.

Police said that Vasantha’s third daughter, Kalyani (32), had died after suffering from jaundice, a few months ago. She, too, was unmarried, like her elder siblings. Ever since her death, the family was fighting to overcome the grief. They had restricted their interactions with their neighbours as well. Monday evening was the last that the neighbours seen them. On Friday, the neighbours perceived a foul smell emanating from the house and called the police. Policemen forced open the front door and found all three women dead and their bodies in a partially decomposed state.

Police said they suspected that they could have committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance. The actual cause of death, they said, could be ascertained only after the postmortem reports were received.
