Gurgaon on Tuesday observed car-free day to free the roads from traffic congestion and encourage people to use public modes of transportation.
The city celebrated 'Car Free Day' (CFD), an initiative by Gurgaon Administration which is organised by Gurgaon Traffic Police and Gurgaon Municipal Corporation with support from NASSCOM, Embarq India, Raahgiri Foundation and Rapid Metro.
Rapid Metro increased the frequency of trains to 3-3.5 mins. Feeder buses were also provided from major metro stations like Huda City Centre, Sikanderpur, Indus Bank Cyber City and from Kapashera border to the major IT hubs of the city.
Meanwhile, the 'car-free' campaign is a big hit in Hyderabad. The campaign 'Car-Free Thursday' was started on August 6 in the IT corridor of Hyderabad in an attempt to tackle the ever increasing traffic and pollution. The campaign has led to reduction of 10-20% of vehicles on the road, increased bus ridership and also less pollution on Thursdays.
The initiative has saved more than 2,00,000 man-hours of time, reduced more than 1 lakh litres of fuel and resulted in increased ridership in buses by 11,000 every Thursday.
