Haryana: In a case of shocking inhumane treatment, 49 thoroughly bred race horses were found abandoned and starving at Gopalpur farm in Haryana. These horses were rescued from a farm in Aligarh last week where they had been abandoned for months and left to starve and die.
A case of cruelty against animals under section 429 has been filed against the owner Yadvendra Singh who is currently missing.
Animal rights activists have expressed shock and despair over the incident. "We found quite a few dying animals there. There were quite a few dead animals there too which they were not able to clear out," Co-founder Friendicoes Geeta Sheshamani said.
Due to weeks of starving, six of these 49 horses were severely malnourished and died after being rescued. However, volunteers say that there were close to 70 horses initially but several of them died before help could reach them. Many of the ones who survived were wounded.
"They are recovering. We are giving them grass, milk powder, electrol and fluids," Dr Akhilesh said.
Yadvendra is the owner of one of the largest stud farms. It has yet not been ascertained why the horses had been abandoned. He had in the past written to a known animal activist Meneka Gandhi claiming that some horses had died due to poisoning.
In the wake of the incident, activists have highlighted the need for more regulation. "I am sure action will be taken to tighten the rules after this incident.
Abandoned and left to die, these horses were seen feeding on the own dung when they were found. While the horses which should have been racing on tracks can now barely stand up, the only silver lining is that their changes of survival are very high.
