London: Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson has been put on stand-by for England's World Cup squad after Luke Young withdrew with an ankle injury, the Football Association said on Sunday.
Central defender Dawson will join the rest of the England squad at their training camp in Portugal on Monday.
Young, one of five players named as reserves when coach Sven-Goran Eriksson named his 23-man squad for the tournament in Germany, pulled out on Saturday after suffering a recurrence of an injury that had seen him miss Charlton Athletic's last seven games of the Premier League season.
"It's amazing really and caps a fantastic season for both myself and the club," Dawson said.
"To actually be in the squad and to see what happens as we build up to a World Cup will be a great experience and I'm looking forward to it. I'll thoroughly enjoy it and we'll see what happens."
