THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Swatantraya Samara Smriti Vaaram-2011 organised by the INTUC district committee was kicked off by KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala at YMCA Hall here on Tuesday. The District Committee is organising different programmes in connection with the Smriti Varam, which will continue till August 15.Ramesh Chennithala said that it is to the freedom fighters of India that the nation owes for the kind of freedom enjoyed by citizens now. He inaugurated the photo exhibition on Gandhiji, which showcases the transformation of a man from a child to a nation’s hero. And his last moments too. K Shankaranarayana Pillai, former Transport Minister, spoke on ‘Quit India samaravum Communist vanchanayum’.On August 14, the District Committee will pay floral tributes to the statues of patriots installed right from Vellayambalam to East Fort. This programme will be inaugurated by K Muraleedharan MLA at the Akkama Cherian Square at 3 pm.On August 15, programmes will be held at VJT Hall which will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. Shashi Tharoor MP will be the chief guest.
