It will be the first library in the capital under the State Library Council to lend e-book reader to its members

The SNV Library, Peringammala here, will soon be the first library in the capital under the State Library Council to lend e-book reader to its members. The library, which functions on modest funds, has embarked on the new initiative to catch the young readers, say the office-bearers.

‘’We have purchased one e-book reader, which is being formally launched on Saturday. More readers will be launched in the coming months,’’ said library secretary G Pushparajan.

The library, which has around 2,500 members on its roll, is one of the biggest in the district. It had earlier hit the headlines for launching an online catalogue and booking system and home delivery of books.

The library, which successfully runs a host of programmes for the overall development of the locality, is a model of sorts for its counterparts in the State.

Balavedi, a forum for children; a skill development centre; arts and sports club and a continuing education centre are part of the library.

‘’We have a large number of young members. The new facility would be an attractive offer for them,’’ said librarian Shajan.

‘’The Wink e-book reader we purchased is specially designed for India as it is the first e-book reader that can support content in up to to 15 Indian languages. The library has purchased around 22 titles for use in the reader,’’ he added.

Deputy Speaker N Sakthan will launch the e-reader at a function to be held at the library hall. The scholarships for poor meritorious students will also be distributed at the function.

The library is one of the 64 taluk reference libraries selected by the State Library Council. It is also the only one of its kind to have an NGO membership with the Central Planning Commission.
