TIRUPUR: Seven persons were washed away as flash floods swept away houses along the banks of Sangilipallam stream in the wee hours of Monday.Official sources said, houses in poramboke lands were submerged following flash floods around 1.30 am. The occupants, who were caught unawares, tried to escape, climbing on to the roof for safety. But as houses collapsed in flood fury seven persons belonging to two families were swept away.Abu Thakeer (36), his wife Dilshad Begam (31), their daughters Shaheena Begam (6) and Nilama (8) and son Abdullah (10), residents of Sathya Nagar managed to get to the roof of their house. But as the house collapsed the family was washed away. “When the house started to collapse, they cried for help. But we could not do anything as the current was powerful. In front of our eyes, the family vanished into the water”, Savitha, a neighbour and an eye witness said. Abu Thakeer was working as cutting master in a hosiery unit, while his wife was a daily worker. Shaheena Begam was studying in Class II, while Abdullah and Nilama were studying in Class IV and V respectively.Saraswathi (40) and her two daughters were washed away by flood waters. Eventhough Saraswathi managed to escape, her daughters cannot be traced. “Six of our family members were asleep at home when the house started to collapse and water entered the house. While three of them managed to escape, I and my daughters Bhuvaneswari (24) and Gnanambal (18) were dragged by the water”, she said.After being dragged along the stream for nearly half a km, Saraswathi managed to get hold of a tree and climbed to safety. In the morning, she was rescued by the Fire and Rescue personnel safely. Gnanambal was a second year BCom student at LRG Government Arts College for Women. Many other residents, who had climbed on their roof tops, were later rescued by some youths with the help of the Fire and Rescue Service personnel.According to official sources, the bodies of Dilshad Begam, Nisha and Gnanambal were recovered.
