BHUBANESWAR: It is not everyday that bullock carts are seen on the roads of Bhubaneswar. So when some enthusiastic college goers set out on a bullock cart journey on the city roads recently, it appeared strange to many commuters. Yet, the intention of the youngsters on board the cart was loud and clear. They urged passersby to take free saplings.
Under the 'My Tree Campaign' which was launched two years back by the citybased Bakul Foundation, students and volunteers distributed tree saplings on ecofriendly wheels. Young volunteers of Bakul Foundation, in association with the State Forest Department and Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA), attracted thousands of people with their 'Tree for Free' campaign, an innovative approach to spread the green message. Volunteers said, 'Tree for Free' is aimed at targeting the busy and crowded areas to encourage the people to take a plant home. They would embark upon a similar campaign on a bullock cart on Sunday too.

The campaign was started on July 10 and would continue till September. The volunteers have distributed 1,000 saplings under the campaign so far and aim to distribute another 10,000 by the end of September. The Forest Department and BDA have donated the saplings to the foundation for the campaign.

Sujit Mohapatra, the founder of Bakul, said, "Our campaign is not just about donating a sapling and forgetting it. We are here to encourage people to plant, nurture and protect the saplings."

People who want saplings can collect them from the Bakul Children's Library in Satyanagar. This apart, the Foundation has set up a helpline 9238404040 for people across the State who want to collect various kinds of saplings.
