Srilakshmi walks out of jail for four months of freedom

Looking frail and in pain, IAS officer Y Srilakshmi walked out of the Chanchalguda women’s prison at 4.38 p.m. Tuesday for four months of freedom.

After 25 days in prison as a suspect in the Obulapuram mining scam case, the former industries secretary seemed unable to walk as she emerged from the prison gates and held on to her IPS officer husband M Gopikrishna’s hand. As security personnel held off photographers, she was helped to her Maruti Zen and driven away to her bungalow in S R Nagar.

A source in the Chanchalguda Special Prison for Women said, “She has been unwell for several months due to severe pain in her back and legs.”

Srilakshmi has four months in which to recover from her various ailments -- chiefly, angina and disc prolapse -- before she is due back in the CBI court on January 21. In all likelihood, she will head to surgery at a corporate hospital in the weeks ahead. While in prison, Srilakshmi took treatment at the Osmania General Hospital and Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences for the spinal problem.

Though doctors advised surgery immediately, she refused to be treated in the general ward of NIMS and appealed for bail. She was awarded interim enlargement in view of her frail condition.

Pre-release formalities kept Srilakshmi in prison for the better part of Tuesday. After rising early and heading to the Nampally Court Complex in the morning, Gopikrishna, boss of Home Guards, was on his toes throughout the day attending to bail terms.
