As expected by the police, a few random instances of violence did break out between groups of students belonging to the Presidency College on Wednesday.
Thanks to their extra vigilance, all the incidents were defused within the forenoon session.
“The groups of students, those who won the elections and those who lost, clashed as soon as college began, but we were ready and managed to contain them and disperse the crowd,” said a police official.
While one group, devoid of weapons, resorted to throwing stones at the other while on the road, riot control cops had to intervene and lathicharge the students into dispersing.
“We were hoping for a peaceful start but things got out of hand, so the police intervened.
The rest of the year will be different,” said a student council representative of Presidency College.
