COIMBATORE: Three inmates of the Coimbatore Juvenile Observation Home were taken to hospital in the last two days after they reportedly attempted suicide by consuming detergent bars. However, the authorities termed two of the cases “dramas” to win sympathy as their parents showed little interest in securing bail for them.On Thursday, a 17-year-old inmate swooned on the premises after he consumed a detergent bar in a futile attempt to kill himself, sources said. Two days ago, the same boy had inflicted cut injuries on his hands with vessels, besides unsuccessfully trying to hang himself using a bed sheet.“He was a repeat offender and twice his mother and relatives arranged bail for him. Earlier also, his relatives arranged bail for him after he threatened suicide. But soon after his release, he again involved himself in crimes and landed in the Home. So, nobody is now willing to make any effort to get bail for him, due to which he was frustrated,” said C M Manickam, secretary of the Home. The boy was treated as an outpatient in the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital on Thursday.Following this, two other boys in the Home, aged between 12 and 17, claimed on Friday that they too had consumed detergent bars to kill themselves. “When we took them to the hospital, after examining them, the doctors said it was a drama and the boys were fine,” Manickam said.
