Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar met with Maharashtra government officials on Wednesday in the wake of second fire in the Deonar dumping ground in less than two months.
Javadekar said his ministry has taken note of the incident."Out of three dumping grounds in Mumbai, the Mulund site will now be closed," he said.
He also added that Tata Consultancy Services has been roped in to suggest an Integrated Waste Management System for Deonar Dumping ground instead of the piecemeal waste recycling projects.
Earlier, the ministry had termed the fire at the dumping yard a 'serious lapse' and had sent a two-member committee, which probed the incident and filed a report, following which strict action was mooted against those who violated norms.
A thick blanket of smoke has covered several areas of the city after the fire started on March 19 evening. The air quality in areas around Deonar worsened, before the fire was doused by the fire department after much effort.
