Tehri dam protests may turn violent
Even though the old Tehri town is being wiped off the map to make place for a dam, the protests continue.

Tehri (Uttaranchal): The protest against blocking the Ganga to fill the 2,400-megawatt Tehri dam is growing stronger.

The people of Allahabad have joined in the agitation against the blocking of the River Ganga to fill up the reservoirs of the dam in Uttaranchal.

People are worried this will dry up the river during the annual Magh Mela that takes place in January and create severe shortage of water.

The Magh Mela is the time when millions of Hindus come to Allahabad to take a holy dip in the Ganga.

Activists say that the dam has already displaced about 100,000 people. They have threatened to resort to violent measures if the flow of river Ganges is stopped.

The flow of the river is expected to be stopped for three years to fill the massive reservoir spread across 42 square kilometer area.

Priests in the area are praying that the water flow gets restored at the earliest.

And its not just activists and priests who are opposing the construction of the 260-metre high dam.

Environmentalists and scientists say it is coming up in an earthquake-prone area.

What's your reaction?
