Imagine waking up all radiant without a single blemish, morning after morning. If you are done with the never-ending parlour sessions, abusing your skin with heavily synthetic, chemical-laden products, this is time you take an ayurvedic break. Though the ancient science of oils and herbs doesn’t promise any overnight surprise, going through an ayurvedic regime can improve the texture and tone of your skin by leaps and bounds. “Abhyangam (massage using medicated oil) and njavarakizhi (a body polishing therapy using a concoction of rice, herbs and milk) are the basic beauty treatments. Abhyangam tones your body and nourishes your skin while njavarkizhi can do wonders to your complexion. There are also some advanced treatments using powerful choornas to exfoliate and rejuvenate lifeless skin,” says Seena T R, Punarjjani Ayurvedic Beauty and Health Clinic.
Ayurveda, the holistic healing system, believes beauty is not just skin deep. Tanned or scaled skin is not an outcome of the winter winds and summer sun alone, it also points to improper food habits, high stress levels and general overdrive. “If your skin breaks into random pimples are rashes, it could be because of the impurities in your body. Cleansing is also a major ayurvedic procedure, but it has to be done under the supervision of an ayurvedic physician. All the toxins accumulated in your body needs to be flushed out first,” says Dr Devidasan Vellodi, AVN Arogya Ayurvedic Centre.
Another highlight of ayurveda is that you get customised treatment depending on your body, skin and hair type. “A single mughalepa cannot be used for all. In some the use of oil will flare up pimples and some others will be allergic to certain herbal powders. If an ayurvedic oil can boost hair growth in one, the same can induce hair fall for another. The elemental quality of oils and herbal mixtures should suit your body,” says Seena.
Ayurveda also advises a balanced diet pattern and insists on the intake of pure and fresh food. “The first step to revive your skin is to stay away from junk, canned or processed food. The taste boosters and chemical preservatives in them can cause harmful skin eruptions. In order to control the level of impurities and reduce the risk of skin anomalies I would recommend the regular use of flaxseed and white tea ,” says seena.
Water is the best detox agent that helps purify your system. “It’s something that stabilises all your bodily functions. So drink oodles of water along with leafy green vegetables. The whole idea of antioxidants comes from the West where they have very limited vegetable varieties. Veggies we have been using for ages like spinach, carrot and tomato are fine sources of antioxidants. And if you are looking for an easy quick-fix go for chyavanaprasham or triphalachoornam,” says Dr Devidasan.
Other than eating right, sleeping well and managing stress levels are also important. Odd sleep circles and rising stress levels can rob the lustre from your skin and spread dark circles under your eyes. So along with the beauty treatments a change in lifestyle is also required for better results.
