Lack of senior professors at Cochin Cooperative Medical College is causing ire among the students who went on a strike on Tuesday.

It was an action packed day at Cochin  Cooperative Medical College on Tuesday with students coming out in protest over the shortage of senior professors.

The protest by the students affected the operation of the administrative wing with students blocking the paths of the office. According to the students, the Medical College has been cheating them by offering very poor standard of education, and the shortage of senior professors has been forcing the students to write the practical internal examination in other colleges.

“The standard of the facility has been very poor. Last year we had to depend on Thrissur Medical College for the practical exams for Biochemistry and Anatomy subjects. We do not have senior professors here for these subjects and the law formulated by the Kerala University of Health Science only allots centre for the examination if each department has a senior professor who can act as the examiner. As per the guidelines, the senior professor should have five years experience with MD degree. Last year when we discussed the issue with the college authority, they promised to find a solution soon. But even after one year nothing has been done. We met the Chief Minister twice and also the director of Cooperative Academy of Professional Education(CAPE) but nothing has been done so far. We will boycott classes if no step is taken in this regard. This year again we are having the examination in Thrissur,” students alleged.

Though the college did invite the students for discussion on the issue, the former were unwilling to attend unless some real changes could be promised. The college officials then called for police aid and protesting students were arrested.

The principal of the college R Gireeshan agreed that they were having difficulty finding a senior professor. “The move for filling the post of senior professors started last year itself. But no one is ready to take up the job. Now senior professors prefer private medical colleges rather than working in a college like ours. Yet, we have managed to fill 26 of the 28 vacant professor posts. Only the post of senior professor is left to be filled. We are looking for help from government so that someone from Medical Services can be deputed for us,” he said.

By afternoon, the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau conducted checking at the hospital following complaints that several non-practising medical professors were practising at the hospital.

“We have checked the files and collected the details in this regard. The investigation would be carried out and action would be taken against the professors who are illegally practising outside,” VACB official said.

Apart from these, a third issue also came up on the same day. The inquiry commission appointed to look into the death of 3 persons at the hospital came to the college and took stock of the situation.
