New Delhi: After delighting Indian audiences for over 70 years with its English version, Belgium's most famous animated cub reporter makes a debut in Hindi.
Tintin has also been dubbed in three other Indian languages - Tamil, Malayalam and Bengali.
The Belgian comic strip, narrating the exploits of a young reporter, has amassed a cult status even since it was launched 75 year ago.
Created by George Remi — under the pseudonym of Herge — in 1929, Tintin has appeared in more than 120 million books and translated into 45 languages, with Hindi being the most recent.
Tintin mania can be gauged from the fact that despite there being no addition to its comic strips ever since his creator died 20 year ago, the comic character is still alive and kicking.
But its certainly not just the enduring charm of this boy reporter but a strict commercial motive driving the move.
Director Star Entertainment Jiten Hemdev says, "Dubbing only gets us a larger audience. Since the programme is popular and we feel that people who don't speak English in India, which are plenty - I mean you've got Telugu, Tamil, Bengali speaking people, so why not entertain them in their own language?"
So you have Tintin and the thundering typhoons hitting the Indian racks as toofani lehren, priced at modest 75 bucks.
But will this spunky Belgian boy,who battles out the bad boys of all hues and sizes can do a Harry Potter.
