New Delhi: A 27-year-old Dalit MPhil scholar of Jawaharlal Nehru University allegedly committed suicide here on Monday.
Police officials say that investigation into J Muthukrishnan's death is ongoing.
"Reason for the suicide is yet to be known. We are investigating his recent Facebook page. His room was searched but no suicide note was found. We have sealed his room so that we can investigate more. It is too early to say anything about the reason for his suicide," said Ishwar Singh, DCP(South).
A native of Salem, Muthukrishnan's family is shattered and shocked. The family refuses to buy the 'suicide' theory. Muthukrishnan's father, Jeevanantham, demanded a CBI probe into the events leading to his son's death and called his death a 'murder'.
Political parties joined the chorus demanding a thorough probe into the death of the deceased.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister expressed condolences on the death of Muthukrishnan. In a statement, he said all efforts to bring the body back to his native place will be arranged by the government of Tamil Nadu. TN Govt also announced a solatium of Rs 3 lakh to the family. AIADMK Deputy General Secretary TTV Dinakaran demanded a judicial probe into Muthukrishnan's death.
"Judicial probe is needed to unravel the truth. I urge Arvind Kejriwal to take note of this," said Dinakaran.
He also added that he was shocked to read about the partiality meted out to students on JNU campus through Muthukrishnan's blog post.
Meanwhile, speaking exclusively to CNN-News18, O. Panneerselvam said: "I am deeply saddened. My condolences to his family. There should be a proper investigation and it should be revealed as to why he died and what he did. Only then will there be justice for the student."
The Opposition too demanded a CBI inquiry into the death of the JNU student. Leader of Opposition in TN, in a statement, said: "Last year, an AIIMS student who hailed from Tirupur died. I demanded a CBI probe then but the Delhi police said it was a case of suicide and didn't want a probe over his death. Till date, we don't know the cause of the AIIMS student's death. Now, another student from Tamil Nadu has also died and the police again say it is a case of suicide. TN CM must immediately speak to the Prime Minister and pressurise him to order a probe."
Exactly fourteen months after the suicide of a Hyderabad scholar Rohith Vemula who set off a Dalit rights movement in many campuses, another student, who was a part of the same struggle, was found dead. But will there be a CBI probe into the death of Muthukrishnan, only time will tell.
