HYDERABAD: Bana Singh, who is the oldest living Param Vir Chakra winner, is in the city, and on the occasion of Independence Day, his story will be presented by Sudarshan Patnaik, a world renowned sand animation expert in his style at HICC on Monday, which is being organised by the Atlanta Foundation. Born in 1949 in Jammu, Bana Singh enrolled himself in the Indian Army on January 6 1969. In June of 1987, during the Siachen Conflict, Bana Singh, who was heading the special task force to eliminate the enemy infiltrators, took his troops from extremely dangerous and hazardous path climbing 1500 meters in a dark snowstorm. He inspired his troops with leadership, courage and indomitable spirit. A total of six enemy soldiers were killed where four of them were killed in hand-to-hand combat with bayonets. Bana Singh was awarded the highest wartime gallantry award in India, the Param Vir Chakra, for conspicuous bravery, courage and leadership under most adverse conditions. The peak that he captured was later renamed to “Bana Top” in his. During the Kargil War, Bana Singh was the only PVC winner who was still serving.Preceeding this show will be the Freedom Ride 2011 at 7 am at HICC. Touted to be India’s biggest corporate cycling event, this ride will witness the participation of more than 30 corporates and 1600 riders to celebrate 64 years of freedom by riding 64 kms or 5/10 kms. The Atlanta Foundation, to promote career enhancing educational programmes for underprivileged students, is organising this ride. The objective of the event is to encourage cycling and raise funds for a social cause. The riders will ride bicycles either for 64kms to coincide with 64 years of Independence Day or 10 or five kms, depending on their enthusiasm and comfort and in turn support the education of underprivileged children. Through out the route, rest stations (at every 10KM) and SAG wagons will be arranged for a hassle-free ride.
