US supports need for nuclear fuel bank

New Delhi: The US is supporting proposals for a UN-supervised International Nuclear Fuel bank.

The bank would stock low-enriched uranium and countries with nuclear power programmes could draw the fuel.

There would be strict verification and inspections in order to prevent proliferation.

The US is hopeful that a bank of this kind would reduce the temptation for countries such as Iran to develop the nuclear fuel cycle.
