Violence after Saddam's death: experts
Experts on international affairs said Saddam's execution will fuel more unrest and violence in Iraq and the region.

New Delhi: The execution of deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein has created a lot of furore across the world.

Experts on international affairs in Delhi were quoted by news agency PTI as saying that the execution of Saddam will fuel more unrest and violence in Iraq and the region even though they were divided over the treatment meted out to the former President of the West-Asian country.

Strategic affairs expert K Subrahmanyam feels that Hussein was no innocent person to be sent to gallows but another retired diplomat G Parthasarathy said the hanging of the Iraqi leader was "unfortunate".

"Saddam is considered a friend of India but he had done many wrong things, especially against the Shias... It had to happen," Former Foreign Secretary Shashank was quoted by PTI.

Echoing similar views, Subrahmanyam noted that Hussein had attacked two non-aligned countries, Iran and Kuwait, and murdered Shias. "He (Saddam) deserved what he got," PTI quoted him as saying.

Striking a discordant note, Parthasarathy said the execution was "unfortunate".

However, all of them opined that the development will lead to more violence in Iraq and the region.

"This will have a serious impact (on the security situation) as it will not be seen as justice done to a criminal. Also Sunnis will have a feeling that they are getting the fair share in Iraq," Shashank said.
