VP wants CBI to probe lecturer's death
Kavita Rani was murdered on October 24, was allegedly involved in blackmailing former UP minister.

Lucknow: Former Prime Minister V P Singh on Monday demanded that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe the murder of Meerut university lecturer Kavita Rani.

"I fully support the demand for a CBI inquiry into the matter," Singh was quoted by agencies as saying. Kavita, who disappeared in October, was involved in blackmailing a former UP minister, the Uttar Pradesh police claim based on the confession of her alleged killer.

Singh was asked to comment on reports that a Jan Morcha leader had recommended Kavita to the Lalit Kala Department of the Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut. "One does not become a suspect just because he nominated someone. I had also nominated several women during my tenure as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh," he said.

The Congress and Mahaveer Singh, the ruling Samajwadi Party's leader in charge North-East affairs, have demanded that ministers Chaudhry Babulal and Kiranpal Singh, whose names figure in Kavita’s letters, be sacked.

Police have alleged that Ravindra Pradhan, who surrendered on Sunday, has confessed to killing Kavita on October 24 after a dispute over sharing Rs 35 lakh earned from a former minister through blackmail.
