CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has deplored the attitude of the government in not arresting the cops who allegedly raped four women belonging to Irular community in Tirukovilur on November 22 night, last year.On an earlier occasion, the Public Prosecutor (PP) submitted that the cops involved in the alleged offence could not be arrested before completion of the investigation and prayed for more time from the first bench comprising Chief Justice MY Eqbal and Justice TS Sivagnanam. After observing that the police would not hesitate to arrest immediately a common man accused of rape, and wondering why the government was not arresting the cops accused of a similar charge, however, granted four weeks time on December 7 last.Even when the matter was taken up on Wednesday, the Public Prosecutor sought some more time for concluding the investigation. To a specific question from the bench, the Public Prosecutor replied that the cops would be arrested in due course. “It is unfortunate that despite our observations made on December 7, the State has not taken any steps against those police officers for the reasons best known to it,’’ the Bench said. The Bench, however, granted two more weeks time to enable the State to complete the probe and take appropriate steps/action against those police officers, and posted the matter on January 18.
