To protest against the growing intolerance in the country, popular author Arundhati Roy has returned her National award which she received in 1989 for Best Screenplay for the film ‘In Which Annie Gives it Those Ones’.
Arundhati, who is the latest to join the growing movement of writers, intellectuals and artistes, says, “If we do not have the right to speak freely, we will turn into a society that suffers from intellectual malnutrition and nation of fools. Across the subcontinent, it has become a race to the bottom, one that the New India has enthusiastically joined."
Not the one to mince words, she has reacted strongly to state her perspective. The author of ‘The God of Small Things’ also believes what artists and intellectuals are doing right now is a “political movement" and “is unprecedented, and does not have a historical parallel."
Filmmakers Dibakar Banerjee, Anand Patwardhan and eight others had recently returned their National Awards, saying their decision to return the awards was a reaction to the apathy displayed by the government in addressing the students' issues and the general environment of intolerance against debate.
