Yet to Take a Call on Padmaavat Release, Says Shivraj Singh Chouhan

Bhopal: Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday said that the Madhya Pradesh government is yet taking any decision on Padmaavat’s release.

Chouhan, who was speaking to media after inaugurating the IPS service meet in the city, said the Advocate General has been asked to study the Supreme Court verdict.

“We will read SC's verdict and take a decision in accordance to the instructions given by the Supreme Court,” said Chouhan.

Chouhan blamed social media for inciting sentiments unnecessarily.

“There are elements on social media who are trying to ignite feelings,” Chouhan said.

The Supreme Court on Thursday has cleared Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat and suspended the ban order by four states. The court also asked the states to ensure safety as the movie releases.

An apex court bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, also restrained all states from banning the Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor starrer. "Creative freedom, freedom of speech and expression can’t be guillotined... artistic freedom has to be protected,” the SC said.

Bhupendra Singh, State Home Minister, said “Some sections are still outraged. We will first see the details of the judgment and then we will take a decision on the movie. We need to review the law and order situation and legal aspects as well.”

Meanwhile, the opposition Congress is not impressed with Chouhan government's response. “Despite SC's order, the BJP was still arguing and finding reasons to not screen the movie. This amounts to contempt of the apex court,” Congress state-president Aruna Yadav said.

Till now, only four single-screen theatres have decided to go ahead with the movie.

Lokendra Singh Kalvi, the head of Rajput Karni Sena who was in Indore on Thursday, had said that the organisation won’t let theatres screen the movie.

“Karni Sena would impose curfew inside theatres while the public would do the same outside,” he said.
