On July 30, Kerala woke up to landslides which washed away about 200 buildings. The incessant 48 hours of rainfalls left the Mundakkai region in Wayanad to receive 572 mm of rainfalls. This caused the hillsides to collapse and sent deluge, mud and boulders crashing down. Reportedly 250 people died and about 5,000 people were affected. As per reports, it also washed away 200 buildings. The landslides also occurred in Chooralamala and the catastrophic disaster almost caused the decimating of these two areas. The tragedy has also raised the topic of environmental change and its detrimental effects daily. While the citizens and the government joined hands for relief and rescue, the state is still reeling from the devastating loss and shock.
Natural disasters have often led to people coming together for relief efforts in the affected areas. While civilians tried their best to rescue, actors have also come forward to express solidarity and donate money to the case. Students from schools and colleges, organisations and others were raising funds to contribute to the Wayanad disaster. Among them was a group of young people in Thuckalay, situated in the Kanyakumari district of Kerala decided to set up a tea stall.
The tea stall was set up for all the volunteers. It was a kind gesture to offer refreshments as everyone worked hard to rescue and offer relief to people trapped. Apart from this, the tea stall also raised funds and was donated to the cause. Kamruddin, a resident of Thuckalay shared, “On behalf of the DYFI student wing, a tea stall was set up to raise funds for the relief efforts in Wayanad, which was affected by the landslide.” This small event saw the participation of Thoothukudi’s Member of Parliament, Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, and Dairy Development Minister Mano Thangaraj. They drank the tea from the stall and appreciated the efforts of the youth.
