Hyderabad: YSR Congress Party on Thursday petitioned Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan seeking disqualification of its MP S P Y Reddy for joining the Telugu Desam Party, under the anti-defection rules.
Leader of Parliamentary Party of YSRCP and Nellore MP, M Rajamohan Reddy noted that S P Y Reddy was elected to Lok Sabha from Nandyal constituency of Andhra Pradesh on the ticket and symbol of YSRCP.
In a letter to the Speaker, he said it has been widely reported in both print and electronic media that S P Y Reddy had voluntarily given up membership of YSRCP to join TDP in the presence of its president N Chandrababu Naidu in New Delhi on May 25.
He also noted that YSRCP was registered with Election Commission of India as a political party in March 2011.
"S P Y Reddy's action of joining TDP after being elected from YSRCP attracts the provisions of clause 2 (1) of the tenth schedule to the Constitution of India and consequently he is liable to be disqualified as a Member of Lok Sabha," the letter said.
"I, therefore, as a leader of Parliamentary Party of YSRCP am submitting the petition for disqualification under the tenth schedule to the Constitution and the anti-defection rules, in this regard," Rajamohan Reddy said.
