Here is a village in East Burdwan where no Durga idol is worshipped. Devi is worshipped here in a different form and in a different way, even today, according to the ancient custom of many years. Let’s find out about the different customs of this puja.
In Kshirgram of Mangalkot in East Burdwan district, no goddess idol is brought out on the occasion of Durga Puja. This tradition has been upheld in this village for years.
Here, the goddess is worshipped in the form of Jogadya. Regarding this special tradition of the village, Kalyan Chakraborty, the priest of Goddess Jogadya, said, “Our mother Jogadya is Dashabhuja. Since we worship the Dashabhuja idol of Maa Jogadya throughout the year, we do not have any other idol here. Only the Navapatrika that is tied to us is considered as Durga. So, this form is worshipped. From the sixth to the tenth day, it is revered.”
He also mentioned that the puja is performed in this manner in six places, including the house of Devi Jogadya in this village. On the other hand, the villagers speak of this century-old custom in their village, saying, “Idols do not come to our village. We have been witnessing this since childhood. Everyone has accepted it. Even people from outside come to our village and appreciate it.”
However, this ancient custom of Kshirgram in Mangalkot, East Burdwan, has remained unchanged over all these years. Even today, during Durga Puja, it is not a mortal form of Goddess Durga, but Goddess Jogadya who is worshipped as the ultimate power.
Simultaneously, the prophetic form of the goddess is revered. And amidst this unique kind of puja, the numerous villagers of Kshirgram are enjoying the joyous festival.
