Born on July 31, 1880 in Lamhi, Munshi Premchand has authored over a dozen novels, 250 short stories and a huge number of essays. His actual name was Dhanpat Rai Srivastava but he was known with names like 'Nawab Rai' and 'Premchand'.
Not only has he contributed to Hindi literature but has also influenced Urdu writing to a large extent. His writings, which draw inspiration from Gandhi, shed light into social issues existing in pre-independent era including caste hierarchies and plight of women. It was his extra-ordinary writing that introduced the concept of social realism in writing back then. Some of Premchand's famous works include Godan, Idgaah, Bade Bhaisaab, Gaban and Poos Ki Raat.
