British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ (BAFTA) 2021 is around the corner and its hype is high! Indians, especially, have a reason to celebrate as the Netflix film, The White Tiger has made it to the shortlist of nominations in a couple of categories. Starring Priyanka Chopra, Adarsh Gourav and Rajkummar Rao in the lead, the movie is directed by Ramin Bahrani and is adapted from Aravind Adiga’s Man Booker Prize-winning debut novel of the same name. However, this is not the first time that the Indian film artists made it to the top nominations of BAFTA and there have been such proud moments in the past too!
As we said above, earlier, Indians have made it to BAFTA in different forms. Here is a look at them
- Just last year, Academy Award-winning music composer AR Rahman was appointed as the ambassador for BAFTA’s ‘Breakthrough Initiative.’ The initiative helps to celebrate up to five talents from movies, games, or TV in India.
- Tracing the ‘Indians at BAFTA’ from a decade ago, the artists from the country have many times secured a place in the nominations list. Back in 2003, British film director of Indian origin, Gurinder Chadha was nominated for her film, Bend It Like Beckham. She was short-listed in the Outstanding British Film category.
- Asif Kapadia, British filmmaker of Indian origin who has memorable nominations and awards at BAFTAs including for the film, The Warrior (starring the late Irrfan Khan). The official page of the awards says, “Winner of both Outstanding Debut and Outstanding British Film in 2003, and nominated for Best Film not in the English Language, Asif Kapadia has since won BAFTAs for Best Documentary for his films Senna and Amy.”
- On the other hand, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Devdas, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit, also was in the list. It was nominated in the category of Best Foreign Language Film.
- In 2013, actor Suraj Sharma was nominated in the category of BAFTA’s ‘Rising Star’ category for the film, Life of Pi.
- In 2015, Ritesh Batra had taken his debut film, The Lunchbox to the BAFTA nominations. Starring the late Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the movie received worldwide critical acclaim along with this coveted spot.
- In 2017, British-Indian star Dev Patel won the best supporting actor category for the movie, Lion.
- In 2018, actor Anupam Kher also made it to the BAFTA nominations. He clinched a spot in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role in the BBC TV movie – The Boy With The Topknot.
- Rohini Hattangadi was the first Indian actress to win the BAFTA Award for best actress in a supporting role for her performance as Kasturba Gandhi in ‘Gandhi’ (1982).
So, as the desi cine-lovers keep their fingers crossed for The White Tiger to ace a category, let’s not to forget to celebrate those who glittered at the BAFTAs much before!
