Shawn Levy promised that his Marvel movie will be accessible to all fans.

The Marvel fans are eagerly awaiting the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, or Deadpool 3, which will hit the theatres on July 26 after several delays. The film will see Marvel characters Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds, and Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman, share the screen for the first time since the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009. Like all Marvel movies, fans are expecting that the film will carry heavy referencing from Marvel Comics and other movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, director Shawn Levy has clarified that even those who are not well-versed in Marvel’s lore will be able to understand and enjoy the film.

Levy, best known for directing the Night at the Museum franchise and producing Stranger Things, spoke to The Associated Press ahead of the film’s release and said that viewers or even Marvel fans don’t have to do any “homework” before watching the film. He explained. “I very much made this film with certainly a healthy respect and gratitude towards the rabid fan base that has peak fluency in the mythology and lore of these characters and this world. But I didn’t want to presume that. This movie is built for entertainment, with no obligation to come prepared with prior research.”

One of the topics that has caused much speculation amongst Marvel fans is an explanation of how Wolverine’s character returns to a Marvel film after it was killed at the end of Logan, a 2017 film. The most likely explanation for Wolverine’s return is attributed to a time travel device in the MCU that allows characters to cross timelines. Perhaps, this time travel device allows Wolverine to be alive in ‘Deadpool 3’, while staying dead in Logan.

Hugh Jackman gave this explanation in a 2022 interview with SiriusXM when he responded to a question about Wolverine’s return in a Deadpool film. Jackman said, “It’s all because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines. Now we can go back because, you know, it’s “science”. So, I don’t have to screw with the Logan timeline, which was important to me. And I think probably to the fans too.”

Another popular explanation is that Deadpool & Wolverine is set in the present, which is before the events of Logan that take place in 2029. Ryan Reynolds, alluded to this explanation when he appeared on Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2022. Reynolds said, “We’ve figured out a way to do it that’s Hugh Jackman-approved and Kevin Feige-approved where we’re completely protecting the legacy of Logan the way it was left off.”
