Renowned filmmaker Sreekumaran Thampi needs no introduction. From being a lyricist and music director to director, producer, and screenwriter, he has been donning multiple hats and has fulfilled all of them quite effectively. Recently, the director known for his various contributions to the film industry has been honoured with the MACTA Legend of Honour Award.
The award is presented by MACTA, the film fraternity, once every three years to honour outstanding talent in the film industry. Those who receive the award also win a cash prize of one lakh rupees, a citation, and a sculpture.
The celebrated music director will be awarded the Legend of Honour award at MACTA’s thirteenth-anniversary function. The event will be held in Kochi in the first week of September. The award was decided by a jury consisting of screenwriter SN Swamy and music director Vidyadharan. In addition to that, the announcement of the award was made by Jury Chairman CB Mala at MACTA’s annual general meeting conducted at Ashir Bhavan, Ernakulam.
Meanwhile, Sreekumaran Thampi last wrote and directed the 2015 Malayalam film Ammakkoru Tharattu. It featured actors Suraj Venjarammoodu, Sharada, Manju Pillai, Madhu, Manikandan Pattambi, Bindu Panicker, Sai Kumar, Indrans, P Sreekumar, and Mamukkoya in key roles. Adding several feathers to his cap, he produced the film, wrote the screenplay and dialogue, and penned down the lyrics.
Sreekumaran Thampi is married to Rajeswari. The duo are the parents of a daughter named Kavitha. They also had a son named Rajkumaran Thampi (also known as Raj Aditya). He was an erstwhile associate of Priyadarshan, who later directed some movies in the Telugu film industry, until his sudden demise in Secunderabad in March 2009.
The veteran lyricist-composer was recently in the news for lashing out at the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, the apex literary body of the state. He alleged the Akademi of insulting him about the penning of ‘Kerala Ganam’, which is to be adopted as the state’s official song, as stated by the government. Thampi said that after the Akademi pressured him to write and compose the song, they disregarded it, even after making all the modifications suggested by the literary body, as per reports by PTI.
