The Hema Committee report, which details poor working conditions and rampant sexual harassment faced by women in Malayalam cinema, is causing seismic upheavals in the entertainment industry in India. Recently, according to reports, the Kerala Hema Committee Model was proposed to be implemented in the Kannada cinema industry as well.
After this, an important meeting was held. Following this, a letter from the Karnataka State Commission for Women has moved ahead with the meeting. But on the day of the meeting, there was a verbal spat between the producers and the Women’s Commission. Meanwhile, this banter has increased for the formation of the Hema model committee.
As per reports, Karnataka State Commission for Women president Nagalakshmi Chowdhary on Monday gave a 15-day deadline to the Kannada Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) to come up with an action plan for putting together a committee against sexual harassment or give reasons why it is not possible to do it.
Dr Nagalakshmi, chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Women, put 14 questions to KFCC. Referring to the meeting held earlier, the State Women’s Commission has demanded an explanation about the measures taken by the film industry regarding sexual harassment and women’s protection.
In this report, there are questions about the safety of women working in various segments of the film industry. Film crews harassing women on the pretext of auditions are also being watched. Therefore, the Women’s Commission has demanded a copy of the Film Chamber Bylaw. All the necessary aspects for the formation of the committee have also been informed. In addition, the commission has also given a deadline of 15 days to answer the 14 questions asked.
Earlier, there was a spat of words between the Board of Trade, the Manufacturers Association, and the Women’s Commission. During this meeting, Producer Rockline Venkatesh was furious with the rioters. Rockline had warned that he would leave the meeting after some producers did not listen to him no matter how much he said to be calm. Then Nagalakshmi, the chairperson of the Women’s Commission, started the meeting while shouting again. At the same time, actress Tara also got up from the meeting.
However, the Hema Committee model is already being debated in the film industry. Stars, senior actors and actresses had expressed their opposition to the formation of the committee. Director Kavitha Lankesh, actress Neethu Shetty, Bhavana Ramanna, Sanjjanaa Galrani, actress Tara Anuradha, Anita Bhatt, Ashwini Gowda, and Sindhu Loknath were involved in the star opposition.
The meeting was held under the leadership of Film Chamber President NM Suresh and Women Commission President Nagalakshmi. More than 20 people, including Umesh Banakar of the Producers Association, former Film Chamber President Sa Ra Govindu, and Vice President Pramila Joshai, were involved in the meeting.
