Jenny McCarthy On How Kelly Ripa Supported Her When Son Was Diagnosed With Autism
Jenny McCarthy's only child, son Evan was diagnosed with autism at the age of 3. She raised him alone and took care of his treatment.

Actress Jenny McCarthy recently shared heartfelt appreciation for her close friend Kelly Ripa, highlighting her unwavering support during one of the toughest times. Speaking on the Let’s Talk Off Camera With Kelly Ripa podcast, McCarthy discussed her son Evan Joseph Asher’s autism diagnosis and credited Ripa as her strongest source of support during that challenging period.

In the recent episode, the 51-year-old Scream actress shared her untold story. “You have been a very instrumental part of my journey. There are moments in your life that you remember, and I say this every time I come on your show. I love this woman. I love her so much,” McCarthy told the talk show host.

Further recalling her son’s autism diagnosis at the age of 3, she added, “When my son was diagnosed with autism, one can imagine what one goes through. It was the end of my life, and my life was devastated. I had to go home and pack a suitcase to get on a plane and go to your show. All I wanted to do was cancel and hold my baby, who was having deadly seizures. But I had to fix him, and I needed money. I just remember going there and saying that I needed help. I was crying backstage and trying to get together, but we got through it, and I am so grateful. I will never forget that it was the lowest part of my entire life, and you were like the next person I saw.”

In response, Kelly Ripa expressed that she loved to be of help to her and provide contacts with an autism advocacy group. “I was happy to be your dolce. Here’s the amazing thing about your son, I know what a fierce advocate you are. You are someone who went through this before there was a real community and a real dialogue around autism. So there were no resources or support groups,” she said.

“There were scary times, and you helped me a lot with several things, so I will always be indebted,” McCarthy added.

This is not the first time that the actress has opened up about her son’s autism. She has always been vocal about the matter and even wrote a book about her experiences titled Louder Than Words: A Mother’s Journey in Healing Autism. McCarthy welcomed her only child, son Evan, in 2002 with her ex-husband John Asher. The couple parted ways in 2005, and she married Donnie Wahlberg, who is now a devoted stepfather to Evan.
