Mr. and Mrs. Smith Season 2 Is Renewed But There's A Twist

Fans of the thrilling spying drama Mr. & Mrs. Smith can rejoice as Prime Video has officially greenlit a second season of the series. Fans will finally discover what happened at the end of Season 1. However, there’s a notable absence in the lineup – stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, who impressed viewers with their electric chemistry in Season 1, are not expected to reprise their roles. Providing a tantalising glimpse into what’s to come, Prime Video teased the upcoming season on X (formerly Twitter) and shared a scene from the explosive season finale of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The caption of the post read, “Season 2…are you in?”

Head of Amazon MGM Studios, Jennifer Salke reportedly said in a statement, “We are excited to announce that a second season of our groundbreaking spy series Mr. and Mrs. Smith is in the works for our global Prime Video customers. The success of the first season, with its incredibly modern, sexy reinvention of the original film, is a testament to the brilliant creators Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane. We are proud to bring you another season filled with unforgettable journeys and new adventures.”

As per a Variety report, Glover and Erskine will not be reprising their roles for Season 2. However, Glover will maintain his involvement as co-creator and executive producer alongside showrunner Francesca Sloane. Despite their absence as leads, there remains a possibility for cameo appearances in the upcoming season. Additionally, Glover has revealed plans for a tour as Childish Gambino from August to February 2025.

Previously, in an interview with Deadline, Glover, Erskine and Sloane remained tight-lipped about what lies ahead for the series. When pressed about the possibility of a new season, Glover joked, “We don’t know, but it depends on whether or not we win an Emmy. If we win, we kind of have to do something, right?”

Created by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane, the series offers a contemporary re-imagining of the beloved 2005 film, starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine as John and Jane Smith. In Season 1, two lonely strangers join a secretive spy agency that promises them the good life, including a coveted brownstone. Assigned to pretend they’re married, John and Jane tackle dangerous missions, forging a genuine connection amidst danger.
