Cinephiles who keep a strong tab on the happenings of B-town will know that for a very long time, Shah Rukh Khan and Sunny Deol were not on talking terms. The reported animosity started during the making of the Yash Chopra film Darr, which starred both of them alongside Juhi Chawla. Darr, released in 1993, had Shah Rukh Khan in the negative role of a psychotic obsessed stalker who could go to any lengths to get his love interest, played by Juhi Chawla. Sunny Deol played the main lead of Juhi’s lover. Despite playing the antagonist, Shah Rukh Khan walked away with all the limelight and the accolades and Sunny Deol was miffed with the fact that he got the meatier role. They did not speak for years. Ironically, Sunny Deol was also responsible for furthering Shah Rukh Khan’s stardom and giving him another film. Sunny rejected a film that was offered to him, with the movie ultimately landing with Shah Rukh Khan..
The film we are talking about is the Rakesh Roshan directed Koyla, released in 1997. Shah Rukh plays a mute character for much of the film, getting back his voice towards the climax. Rakesh Roshan originally offered the film to Sunny Deol, but he did not want to play a mute character and did not like the story. He passed on the project and Rakesh Roshan then cast Shah Rukh Khan, with whom he had worked two years earlier in Karan Arjun.
Koyla turned out to be an average grosser film. With a budget of Rs 12 crore, it made more than double, earning Rs 28 crore in its worldwide box office. It is interesting to note that Hrithik Roshan, who had not yet debuted in films, was an assistant director to his father in the film. Amrish Puri won the Filmfare Award For Best Actor in a Negative Role for this film.
